Victoria's highest court has ruled that Tony Mokbel, an underworld figure, will not face extra prison time related to a methamphetamine trafficking operation.
The Court of Appeal re-sentenced Mokbel to time already served after several of his convictions were overturned in connection with the Lawyer X scandal.
Mokbel, currently out on bail, was re-sentenced this morning for a drug scheme he ran during 2006 and 2007 while hiding in Greece and evading Australian police.
"Tony Mokbel is no longer a 'serious drug offender' and will not be forced back to prison over the methamphetamine racket."
At the conclusion of Thursday’s hearing, Mokbel kissed his partner passionately before leaving the court without commenting to the media.
Mokbel is scheduled to return to court later this month for a separate drug-related case.
"This decision marks another significant legal victory for Mokbel, bringing him closer to total freedom after more than 6,500 days in custody."
