'No-brainer' - Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin explains decision to stage World Club Challenge at Hull FC

Hull KR to Host World Club Challenge at Rival's Stadium

Hull KR will stage the World Club Challenge at Hull FC's MKM Stadium early next year, a decision confirmed by chief executive Paul Lakin. This follows Hull KR's victory in the Super League last month, earning them a clash with NRL champions Brisbane Broncos.

Decision Behind Venue Choice

The match is set for Thursday, February 19, but unlike expected, it will not be held at Hull KR’s usual ground, Craven Park. Instead, the game will take place at the larger MKM Stadium to maximize attendance and provide a grander stage for the event.

"It was definitely a consideration to play it at home but it became a bit of a no-brainer," said Lakin. "You want to hold it in the biggest stadium possible for as many people to see the best players in the world. We felt the World Club Challenge deserved a bigger platform."

Lakin emphasized that staying at Craven Park could limit attendance and cause frustration among fans unable to secure tickets. Choosing the MKM Stadium ensures a sold-out crowd and a bigger audience.

Historic First for Hull KR

This will be Hull KR’s inaugural contest in the World Club Challenge, marking a significant milestone for the club early in the season. Fans hoping to see star player Reece Walsh and the Broncos at Craven Park must now travel across the city for this unique occasion.

"We're keeping it in our city, which was the number one priority," added Lakin. "That wasn't easy because Hull City are playing at the ground on the Saturday."

Summary

Hull KR’s choice to host the World Club Challenge at their rival’s stadium prioritizes fan access and city pride, ensuring the event reaches a larger audience while marking a historic first for the club.
