Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why the World Club Challenge will take place at the home ground of their rivals, Hull FC. He emphasized that the Super League champions always aimed to keep the event in Hull and welcomes Hull FC fans at the MKM Stadium to support the Brisbane Broncos.
The Robins will host next year’s match between the two strongest club teams in world rugby league at their rivals’ stadium, a decision Lakin defends as financially sound and responsive to anticipated high demand from fans of both sides.
Initially, there was some thought about moving the game to Elland Road, but it became clear that Craven Park's capacity was too limited. Therefore, the MKM Stadium across the city was chosen as the only viable option.
“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull. It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible. The players we have in our side, they want to play on the biggest stage possible. For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.”
Lakin highlights the importance of hosting the game in Hull while balancing capacity limits and financial considerations to maximize fan participation and player experience.
Author's summary: The venue switch to MKM Stadium ensures the World Club Challenge remains in Hull, meeting high demand and financial needs without conflict over rival fan attendance.
