President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has filed criminal charges against a man who was filmed groping her and attempting to kiss her while she was walking near the presidential palace in Mexico City.
The incident, recorded on Tuesday, has reignited a national discussion about women’s safety. Sheinbaum, the country’s first female president, was on her way to the Education Ministry, greeting citizens and posing for photos when the assault occurred.
According to social media videos, the man approached her from behind, put his arm around her shoulder, then touched her chest and hip while trying to kiss her. Her security detail quickly intervened and detained the man, who reportedly appeared intoxicated.
"This person approached me completely drunk, I don't know if he was on drugs,"
Sheinbaum said on Wednesday morning, adding that she realized the extent of the incident only after watching the videos.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed that the man has been arrested. During a press briefing, Sheinbaum explained that she decided to move forward with legal action upon learning that the same man had harassed other women soon after the assault.
"No man has the right to violate that space,"
she stressed, underscoring her commitment to women’s safety and accountability.
The arrest of a man for groping President Claudia Sheinbaum has sparked renewed calls across Mexico to strengthen protections for women against public harassment.
