Wrexham player James McClean has frequently been at the centre of controversy for refusing to wear a poppy, sparking strong reactions. He shared that his team-mates are often surprised but respectful once he explains his reasons for this choice.
McClean grew up on the Creggan estate in Derry, the area where about half of the 13 unarmed civilians were killed by British soldiers on Bloody Sunday in 1972. This tragic event deeply influences his stance. He has stated that he cannot wear the poppy because it symbolizes all conflicts involving the UK, which conflicts with his personal history and beliefs.
In an interview with Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, the 36-year-old revealed growing frustration over having to repeatedly explain his beliefs. This issue has followed him since his time at Sunderland in 2012.
"I just wish it would go away. It’s exhausting constantly having to explain myself."
He also mentioned concerns from his wife, fearing his safety due to the hostility he faces, including during live broadcasts.
James McClean's refusal to wear the poppy, rooted in his personal history, has caused ongoing controversy, yet he finds understanding among teammates despite facing hostility from others.
