Aimee Lou Wood recently responded with disgust to Sydney Sweeney’s comments about a controversial American Eagle ad. Wood’s reaction highlights tensions around the ad's reception and the public discourse it sparked.
Sydney Sweeney appeared in an American Eagle ad that played on the words “jeans” and “genes” with the slogan, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The ad drew criticism from some who viewed it as a subtle endorsement of eugenics, sparking a significant backlash.
Despite the controversy, several conservative figures, including Donald Trump, publicly supported the ad. Sweeney expressed surprise at the reaction and the backing from these commentators.
“I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
“It was surreal that Trump and JD Vance spoke out in support of the ad.”
Sweeney’s apparent dismissal of the concerns and alignment with conservative supporters led to further criticism. Many expected her to distance herself from those endorsing the campaign, especially given the sensitive accusations of promoting eugenics.
Photographer Misan Harriman voiced his disappointment on Instagram, emphasizing the harm caused by the campaign:
“Presuming that you are not a white supremacist, at least say how horrified you were by how this campaign was amplified and celebrated by unrepentant racists who believe in eugenics. At least recognise the harm your jeans campaign has caused black folk.”
Fellow White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood indicated her displeasure with Sweeney’s words by commenting a vomiting emoji on the interview, signaling her disapproval without elaborate statements.
Wood's brief but clear reaction reflects the broader discomfort felt by many about Sweeney's stance and the campaign’s implications.
