A playdate between two neighbors in a Lancaster neighborhood turned tragic on Monday night when a 9-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the head at a home on Summitview Drive.
According to the Lancaster Police Department, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. while two children were in the basement of the home, where the young boy reportedly found the firearm.
"My grandson shot himself in the head,"
the boy's grandfather told dispatchers in a desperate 911 call. The boy passed away on Friday at 12:50 a.m., Lancaster police confirmed on Saturday, October 11.
