Kathy Klugman, a seasoned diplomat and strategist, will become the director-general of national intelligence, replacing Andrew Shearer at the end of his term in December.
A distinguished public servant, Klugman has served as Australia's high commissioner to Sri Lanka, with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region. Her experience includes senior positions within Prime Minister & Cabinet and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Ms Klugman is the first woman to lead the Office of National Intelligence or its predecessor, the Office of National Assessments.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles announced Klugman's appointment, which was approved by the governor-general.
