Carolyn Chase, a 74-year-old Anacortes resident, has been volunteering at Cap Sante Park for about four days a week since February.
She was drawn to the park's historic rock amphitheater, which reminded her of a "real holy place" she knew in Hawaii. The amphitheater, built around 1938, had become overgrown with "weeds up to knee-high" and invasive plants.
It reminded me of a real holy place I knew in Hawaii.
Chase's efforts have transformed the area, removing large quantities of weeds and brush, and uncovering the amphitheater's rock walls and seating. According to Jonn Lunsford, director of the Anacortes parks and recreation department, Chase is the latest in a long line of volunteers who have worked to clean up the amphitheater over the years.
Lunsford noted that "each volunteer has done their own thing" to contribute to the restoration of the historic site.
