Invasive mussels have pushed whitefish to the brink of extinction in lakes Huron and Michigan.
Whitefish are central to the Anishinaabe understanding of creation and supported a booming fishing industry for generations.
However, in the span of a few decades, populations have crashed in lakes Michigan and Huron.
Few things are as synonymous with the Great Lakes as whitefish.
Lake Superior is so far spared from the crisis.
A collaboration of news organizations, including Bridge Michigan and Great Lakes Now, are working together to bring news and information about the impact of climate change and pollution on the Great Lakes.
