As President Donald Trump's Columbus Day proclamation pledges to "reclaim" the holiday honoring the Italian explorer, Native Americans in Nevada are renewing their call to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day.
A celebration that better reflects their heritage and history, according to them, is needed.
"The idea of celebrating Columbus goes back in the United States really to the 300th anniversary of when he sailed back in 1792,"said Michael Green, a professor of history at UNLV.
