Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is giving House Speaker Mike Johnson an ultimatum: schedule Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva's swearing-in ceremony within two days or face a lawsuit.
As of October 14, 2025, Grijalva, who was elected to represent Arizona's 7th Congressional District, has not been sworn in, prompting Mayes to take action. In a letter to Johnson's office, Mayes stated that the oath of office ceremony must take place before the end of the federal government shutdown.
Mayes announced that she was sending the letter during the official canvas of the Sept. 23 special election results.
The attorney general's move comes after a three-week delay in Grijalva's swearing-in ceremony. Mayes has set a deadline of Thursday for Johnson to schedule the ceremony.
