Monday marks the first time Montana has officially commemorated Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a legal holiday.
After a decade of urging recognition, a group of state lawmakers and advocates succeeded in making it a state holiday. Republican Gov. Greg Gianforte signed Senate Bill 224 into law, establishing Indigenous Peoples’ Day alongside Columbus Day.
