SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose police continue to search for the suspect who opened fire inside the Westfield Valley Fair mall on Friday evening after what investigators describe as a gang-related altercation.
Authorities reported that three people were injured during the incident. One victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while the other two suffered less severe wounds. All are expected to recover.
According to police, the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. near the shopping center’s food court after two groups began arguing. The situation quickly escalated, leading one individual to draw a firearm and shoot multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Officers and mall security immediately evacuated the area, and the mall was temporarily locked down while emergency responders arrived. Detectives believe the confrontation stemmed from a prior dispute between rival gangs.
Police units remained at the mall through the night, gathering evidence and reviewing surveillance footage to identify the gunman. Authorities urged anyone with information or video recordings from the scene to come forward.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan condemned the violence, stating in a public message,
“We will not tolerate this kind of lawlessness in our city. Our police department has my full support to bring those responsible to justice.”
In response to the shooting, local officials announced plans to increase police patrols around major shopping centers during the holiday season. Westfield Valley Fair management also said they are cooperating fully with investigators to ensure the safety of guests and staff.
“We are deeply concerned by this incident and are working closely with local authorities,” the mall’s spokesperson said.
