RSS Chief on Language Shift in India
RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over Indians increasingly forgetting their native tongues and local languages due to the rising influence of English. He highlighted that this trend is impacting India's rich linguistic heritage.
Cultural Importance of Native Languages
Bhagwat emphasized the cultural significance of preserving native languages, mentioning the challenge translators face with deeply cultural and mythological words such as Калпаврекша ('Kalpavruksha'), a mythical wish-granting tree from the Indian epic Samudra Manthan. This example underscores how native terms carry profound cultural meanings that are difficult to translate or replace.
Impact of English Influx
The influx of English has brought global connectivity and modern education but is also causing a decline in the daily use and transmission of indigenous languages across generations. Bhagwat warned that neglecting native tongues could lead to loss of cultural identity and wisdom embedded in these languages.
Call for Preservation Efforts
He advocated for conscious efforts to promote and preserve local languages alongside English proficiency. This includes incorporating native languages in education and encouraging their use at home and in community life to maintain the linguistic diversity of India.
"Language is not just a means of communication but a repository of culture, history, and identity," said Bhagwat, stressing the urgency to balance English learning with native language preservation.
This highlights a crucial cultural challenge where the global rise of English threatens the survival of India's native languages, urging proactive measures for linguistic preservation alongside modernization.
