ORLEANS — John Kanaga, the moderator of the Orleans Special Town Meeting, described the experience as “a different perspective from any town meeting I’ve attended before.”
Taking his place at the podium instead of among the attendees, Kanaga and the Select Board later evaluated what worked well and what could improve next time.
The meeting drew a strong turnout, reflecting residents’ continued commitment to civic participation. Many attendees appreciated the clear presentation of articles and the opportunity for open discussion.
Select Board members noted that, despite disagreements on certain proposals, the gathering highlighted the town’s engagement and willingness to debate major community issues.
However, not everything went smoothly. Technical difficulties, including microphone issues and delays with vote counting, caused frustration.
Board members also cautioned that some meeting rules were misunderstood by attendees, leading to moments of confusion. Kanaga said efforts will be made to simplify the process and offer clearer guidance at future meetings.
The Select Board agreed to review the physical layout of the meeting space, refine procedures for article presentations, and improve communication beforehand.
Kanaga emphasized that “each meeting provides a chance to learn,” adding that these lessons will help ensure future sessions run more efficiently and inclusively.
“It’s a different perspective from any town meeting I’ve attended before,” said Moderator John Kanaga.
