Millions of suitcases get lost every year by US travelers. The belongings inside these lost bags frequently end up at a warehouse in Alabama, where the items are sorted and prepared for resale or donation.

CNN contacted several major US airlines to understand their lost luggage handling methods. Among them, United Airlines and others explained how they trace and store lost baggage. Despite continuous efforts, the volume of misplaced luggage remains significant.
“We do our best to reunite bags with their owners, but millions still get separated each year,” said a representative from one airline.
Where Lost Bags Go
Unclaimed suitcases are transported to centralized hubs, including a large facility in Alabama. Here, items are categorized, and anything unclaimed after a set period is auctioned or donated. This system helps airlines manage the overwhelming amount of lost personal goods.
