In a school board election dominated by incumbents, a newcomer emerged victorious in the Pittston Area Board of Education race, based on preliminary results from Luzerne County released Tuesday.
With all precincts reporting, Marissa Chiumento secured a seat on the Pittston Area school board, finishing first with a clear lead. She received 5,857 votes, outpacing her closest rival by 381 ballots.
Chiumento works as a clinical pharmacist specializing in endocrinology at Geisinger and owns a local entertainment company. She earned nominations from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
During her campaign, Chiumento highlighted a growing trend of families opting for private schools instead of public education. She emphasized the need for Pittston Area to improve student career readiness and overall wellbeing.
Both Adonizio and Healey were nominated by both major parties. Quinn, who has served about 35 years and has a local school named after him, appeared only on the Democratic ticket, which likely impacted his vote total.
The top four candidates, including the newcomer Chiumento, earned seats on the school board.
