Tragedy as Woman Dies After Stabbing

A 34-year-old woman, Katie Fox, died after being stabbed near the Bullring and New Street station in Birmingham. The attack occurred on Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9 p.m. on November 7.

Djeison Rafael, aged 21 and from Rosedale Avenue in Smethwick, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court accused of murder. He also faces two additional charges of causing actual bodily harm on October 27 and November 7, possession of a Stanley blade on November 7, and assaulting a detention escort officer on November 8.

The court ruled that Rafael was not required to enter a plea as the offences are too serious for the magistrates' court. His case will proceed to Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, November 12.

Public Concerns About Safety

People in the city centre were asked about their sense of safety following the incident.

“It depends on the time of day really. I get here at 6.50 a.m. and it’s pitch black,” said Paige, 20. She noted that while she feels safe around Colmore Row, some other areas make her uneasy.

“Places that can be really busy but suddenly go quiet, like when you’re walking through Digbeth and there’s no one around — that doesn’t feel great. I still do it though, especially with friends. In summer it’s lighter, and you can see everything, so it feels easier,” added Paige.

Norah, who lives in Devon but grew up in Birmingham, said: “I feel fine.”

Next Steps

The latest updates on the case are expected after Rafael’s court appearance on November 12.
