BBC Radio 2 presenter Sara Cox has launched an ambitious 135-mile ultramarathon to support Children in Need. Starting from Kielder Forest on the English-Scottish border, she aims to reach Hexham in Northumberland by Monday evening. Over the next four days, she will continue southward, finishing in Pudsey, Yorkshire, on Friday.
The event, named the Great Northern Marathon Challenge, covers a distance equal to just over five marathons in five days. Sara will carry Children in Need’s iconic Pudsey Bear throughout the route, marking the mascot's 40th anniversary.
“It’s a terrifying privilege, it’s a terrifying, scary, very tiring privilege to do this… so I’ve trained hard and I’m ready for it. You have no choice but to say yes because it’s a chance to raise lots of money and change lives.”
DJ Scott Mills, who saw Sara off on his breakfast show, described the challenge as the toughest ever for a presenter, surpassing even past attempts by Vernon Kay.
“This is the toughest challenge, simply put, that we have ever put one of our presenters through… way harder than Vernon’s. It’s brutal this one.”
Sara follows in the footsteps of other well-known BBC personalities who have taken on demanding challenges to raise funds for the charity.
Summary: Sara Cox undertakes a grueling 135-mile ultramarathon across northern England to raise funds for Children in Need, marking a significant and inspiring charity effort on the 40th anniversary of Pudsey Bear.
