Rachel Homan defeated Kaitlyn Lawes 8-3 Thursday night at the KIOTI GSOC Tahoe, extending her team’s winning streak to 30 consecutive games against Canadian clubs.
Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based team keep finding fresh ways to outplay fellow Canadian squads. Their latest victory over Winnipeg’s Team Kaitlyn Lawes marked their 30th straight win against Canadian opponents and improved their season record to 80-2 since the 2023-24 season began.
Despite the dominant statistics, the game had its challenges. In the third end, Homan took advantage of a mistake by Lawes, stealing two points when Lawes’s shot came up light and tight.
Later, in the seventh end, Homan made a risky but rewarding shot to score a deuce. She drove Lawes’s stone out of play, which then bumped another Homan stone into the scoring rings for two points.
“Yeah, getting two there was huge,” said Sarah Wilkes, Team Homan’s lead stone thrower. “Going into that end, we kind of talked about what was ideal. Being forced was probably the least ideal out of all the situations. Definitely got a little lucky with the way we got the two, but it was a huge momentum swing for sure.”
Fortunately for Team Homan, the Tahoe Blue Event Center is located on the Nevada side of the border, where taking such risks is common and often beneficial.
Lawes, trailing 6-3 and holding the hammer in the final end, needed a miraculous shot on her last stone to change the outcome.
Author’s summary: Rachel Homan’s team continues its impressive run against Canadian rivals, blending skill and calculated risks to maintain a 30-game winning streak.
