Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster share two children together, though the father of eight was initially hesitant about expanding his family when they first met in the 1990s.
Penny Lancaster, 54, reflected on their home life and the challenges they faced raising their eldest son, Alastair. The couple celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary earlier this year. They met in 1999, began dating, and Rod proposed during a romantic trip to Paris in 2005. They married in 2007 at the medieval monastery La Cervara in Portofino, Italy.
After Alastair was born, Rod adjusted his tour schedule around the baby’s naps and dubbed the tour the Alastair Wallace Stewart Tour. Penny would keep Alastair’s Moses basket next to their bed while on tour, although the baby's colic caused her great distress.
“Every afternoon at exactly 4pm he’d give a shrill scream that sounded as though he was dying,” Penny wrote in her book Someone Like Me.
The only relief for their son was the sound of Rod’s Great American Songbook collection playing softly. Penny believes the music brought Alastair comfort by reminding him of the security of the womb, recalling how she once listened to Rod recording in the studio while pregnant.
Author’s summary: Penny Lancaster shares a touching glimpse of early parenthood with Rod Stewart, highlighting the couple’s love, challenges with baby colic, and how music became their son’s comfort.
