A woman and a child drowned after falling into Dandenong Creek near Allan St in Dandenong, Melbourne’s southeast, around 3:45pm on Monday. Witnesses reported that the woman was attempting to save the child when both were swept away by the water.
Victoria Police stated,
“Police conducted a search of the area and located the unconscious pair, pulling them from the water and starting CPR.”
Despite the efforts of emergency services,
“they were unable to be revived and declared deceased at the scene.”
The incident prompted a large emergency response, with one witness noting on X (formerly Twitter) that there were “cops and SES everywhere.”
The identities of the two victims have not yet been officially released. A witness estimated the child’s age to be about seven or eight years old.
