The National Capital Commission (NCC) confirms it is ready to face the challenges of a warmer, wetter winter season predicted for the Rideau Canal Skateway.
Ottawa might see between five and fifteen centimeters of snow on Sunday, which would be the first official snowfall of the season. However, this snow may not last throughout the winter.
Normally, Ottawa's first snowfall occurs in late October, but this year's delayed start could indicate a trend for the season.
The Farmers' Almanac 2025-2026 forecast predicts increased precipitation for southern Quebec, including Ottawa, but with less snow overall. This suggests a wetter winter with more rain and mixed precipitation reducing snow accumulation.
Environment Canada expects temperatures slightly above seasonal averages, though cold spells will still occur through December and into early January.
Winter weather unpredictability is increasing across the region, which poses challenges for winter events like Winterlude and the Rideau Canal Skateway.
Despite this, the NCC expresses confidence in maintaining the skateway each season and adapting to varying conditions.
“Every year, we work diligently under challenging conditions to produce enough high-quality ice that is suitable and safe for mass use,” said Maryam El-Akhrass, an NCC spokesperson.
Author’s summary: The NCC remains committed to preserving safe ice conditions on the Rideau Canal Skateway despite forecasts of a warmer, wetter winter with less consistent snowfall impacting the region.
