After reducing operations in Raleigh, Avelo Airlines is focusing more on Wilmington based on its strategic goals. Despite protests and cutbacks at one of North Carolina’s major airports, Avelo officials affirm their commitment to offering low-cost service in Wilmington.
Due to a crowded carrier market, Avelo is scaling down its services at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, said Trevor Yealy, Head of Network and Revenue, in an interview with the StarNews. Although Raleigh-Durham continues to grow rapidly, Avelo has built its reputation over the past four years by serving “unique markets” like Wilmington.
“Wilmington is still largely just served by legacy airlines to their hubs, with a select few exceptions,” Yealy said. “The universe of unserved, untapped potential is quite a bit larger there.”
Avelo began flying from Wilmington International Airport in 2022 and established an onsite base in April 2025. This base is the airline’s eighth and operates two aircraft, generating approximately 40 operational jobs.
Despite controversy over Avelo’s involvement in deportation flights, the airline serves more destinations from Wilmington than any other carrier.
