The series Death by Lightning, released on Netflix on November 6, explores the assassination of President James Garfield. Garfield was shot on July 2, 1881, just four months into his term, and died from his wounds a few months later at the age of 49.
The four-part series begins at the 1880 Republican National Convention in Chicago. U.S. Senator John Sherman (Alistair Petrie) chose Ohio congressman and farmer James Garfield (Michael Shannon) to speak on his behalf because of Garfield’s compelling oratory skills. The delegates were divided between Sherman, Senator James Blaine of Maine (Bradley Whitford), and former President Ulysses S. Grant (Wayne Brett). After 36 ballots, Garfield was nominated due to his inspiring speech.
James Garfield was inaugurated as the 20th President of the United States on March 4, 1881, alongside his Vice President Chester Arthur (Nick Offerman).
The series also follows Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen), an eccentric man obsessed with Garfield after his 1880 speech. Guiteau sought a government position but was repeatedly rejected, eventually turning from admirer to assassin.
“Here’s what to know about the short-lived Garfield presidency and how Guiteau went from adoring Garfield to killing him.”
