Paul Kelly has launched his new album Seventy in a milestone year, reflecting on a life fully lived while continuing to explore the human experience fearlessly.
The album features the notable single Rita Wrote a Letter, a sequel to Kelly’s 1996 classic How to Make Gravy. This track revisits the story from Rita's perspective, with Joe still speaking from beyond.
“I’ve been mulling over the idea of a sequel to ‘How to Make Gravy’ from Rita’s point of view for quite some time. About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title.’”
“Rita wrote a letter / One you don’t want to get from your wife / When Rita writes a letter / The pen is sharper than the knife.”
The album includes the tender new single Happy Birthday, Ada Mae, accompanied by a music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy Kelly. The video stars his granddaughter, two-year-old Ada Mae, and offers a heartfelt reflection on love and legacy.
“In the end, love is all of us that remains,” Kelly says, highlighting the song’s core message. “It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter.”
Author's summary: Paul Kelly’s album Seventy combines personal storytelling with heartfelt reflections on family and life’s meaning, marked by collaborations with his daughter and granddaughter.
