Former communications minister Stephen Conroy and former Socceroo goalkeeper Mark Bosnich reflected on their friendship with Graham Richardson, who passed away Saturday at age 76. Richardson was remembered as a "legend of the Labor movement."
Graham Richardson was a senior cabinet minister in the Hawke and Keating governments and a key Labor powerbroker. He was also a family man, husband, and father, and contributed to Sky News Australia for 15 years.
“I was lucky enough to know him for 41 years and (he was) a legend of the Labor movement.”
Conroy emphasized Richardson's immense impact on the Labor Party and expressed condolences to Richardson’s wife Amanda and children.
“It really is impossible to overstate the importance and impact of Graham to the Labor Party.”
Conroy highlighted Richardson’s lessons to young Labor activists that politics was about loyalty rather than purity of opposition policies. He said Richardson’s philosophy was “whatever it takes” and that he was respected across all party factions.
“Richo’s guiding philosophy was ‘whatever it takes’ and he was loved by all factions of the party, left and right.”
Conroy also noted that although Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had been a rival faction leader to Richardson for decades, he continued to learn from him.
“While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese fought with Mr Richardson ‘for decades’ as opposing Labor faction leaders, he would still learn from the late powerbroker.”
Author's summary: Graham Richardson was a highly influential Labor figure whose dedication, loyalty, and political pragmatism left a lasting impact recognized across party lines.
