Jeopardy! host Ken Jennings issued a belated apology after an October 24 episode included a clue about the viral meme character John Pork, which sparked confusion and criticism online.
John Pork is a meme figure with a pig's head and a human body. He has appeared on Instagram and TikTok since at least 2018, long before the recent rise of generative AI content.
During the category “Daddy, Is There Really A…,” a clue described John Pork as “AI-generated,” which many viewers contested as inaccurate and misleading.
The mistake prompted backlash from those familiar with the meme, who argued that John Pork was popular well before AI-generated content became widespread.
“When we played a clue recently on Jeopardy! on John Pork, I remarked that I didn’t understand a word of it,” Jennings said in a social media video apology.
Jennings admitted not understanding the meme at the time, highlighting that recognizing such internet culture references requires being deeply engaged online.
Though John Pork is currently considered “deceased” for reasons not elaborated, the character is expected to linger in internet culture even as AI trends evolve.
The meme’s endurance was humorously compared to a future dominated by robot overlords, imagined as an air fryer that folds laundry and performs jury duty.
