Port Canaveral is on track for an even greater 2026 as it continues to strengthen the Space Coast economy. In the recent State of the Port address, CEO Capt. John Murray announced that nearly 9 million passengers sailed through the port in 2025.
These impressive numbers benefit local businesses like Defender Comics, located just down the road from the port. Pat Ferraro, after two decades in corporate aviation, fulfilled his lifelong dream by opening this comic book shop.
Opened only four months ago, Defender Comics is a vintage treasure trove with back issues spanning from the 1950s through the early 2000s.
“I like the art and the stories from back in the original days,” Ferraro explains.
Ferraro quickly identified his main patrons: cruise passengers disembarking at the port.
“A lot of them are waiting in line for restaurants, or they are just looking for something to do, so they’ll come in here, buzz around, check out the store, pet the cat,” Ferraro said.
Port Canaveral’s growing passenger traffic is boosting the local economy and supporting unique businesses like Defender Comics, enriching the community with culture and commerce.
