Alcibiades Lazaro Ramirez Gonzalez and Yannier Vazquez Hidalgo, two men from North Syracuse, were recently transferred to an ICE detention center in Batavia. After years of being together across two countries, they decided to get married two months ago.
The couple invited their family to a courtroom in Clay to witness their union. In the photos, “Yan” and “Alex” are smiling brightly, surrounded by sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Yan held a bouquet of peach roses.
Their marriage is difficult to accept in Cuba, the country they fled for the United States in 2021 and 2022. Both men work at SUNY Upstate Medical University, with Alex serving as a supervisor in the same department. They also purchased a home together in North Syracuse.
News of their detention spread quickly among relatives and coworkers. By Saturday, family members and colleagues had gathered around Governor Kathy Hochul, urging her to intervene.
“Yan” and “Alex” beamed with joy surrounded by family, but now face the uncertainty of deportation despite their established life here.
