Valve will finally turn off the Steam Deck’s screen while it’s downloading games

Valve Introduces Low-Power Download Mode for Steam Deck

Valve is rolling out a new feature for the Steam Deck that allows the handheld PC to finish downloading games while the screen is turned off, reducing power consumption.

New Display-Off Mode on Beta and Preview Channels

The update, currently available on Steam Deck’s Beta and Preview channels, lets the device complete all active downloads in a low-power mode with the display off before going to sleep, Valve explains.

User Experience Improvement

This change is welcomed by many users who often download large games and updates. Previously, the Steam Deck had to stay fully powered with the screen on during downloads, which was less energy efficient.

Background and Valve’s Previous Position

Two years ago, when the Steam Deck OLED model launched, Valve was hesitant about this feature. Hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat noted,

“We burn a substantial amount of power when you’re downloading,” suggesting that leaving the Deck on could cause it to heat up, which might be risky if stored in a bag mistakenly thinking it was asleep.

Valve’s current update seems to address these safety and power concerns by introducing the new low-power mode.

How the Feature Works

This feature enhances convenience for users, balancing power efficiency with continuous downloads.

Author’s summary: Valve’s new low-power mode for Steam Deck lets users download games with the screen off, improving battery life and addressing previous concerns about heat and safety.
