Valve is rolling out a new feature for the Steam Deck that allows the handheld PC to finish downloading games while the screen is turned off, reducing power consumption.
The update, currently available on Steam Deck’s Beta and Preview channels, lets the device complete all active downloads in a low-power mode with the display off before going to sleep, Valve explains.
This change is welcomed by many users who often download large games and updates. Previously, the Steam Deck had to stay fully powered with the screen on during downloads, which was less energy efficient.
Two years ago, when the Steam Deck OLED model launched, Valve was hesitant about this feature. Hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat noted,
“We burn a substantial amount of power when you’re downloading,” suggesting that leaving the Deck on could cause it to heat up, which might be risky if stored in a bag mistakenly thinking it was asleep.
Valve’s current update seems to address these safety and power concerns by introducing the new low-power mode.
This feature enhances convenience for users, balancing power efficiency with continuous downloads.
