Valve Adds Display-Off Download Mode to Steam Deck
Valve has introduced a new low-power display-off download mode to its Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED handhelds, aimed at saving power and potentially extending screen lifespan.
Feature Details
- The display turns off during active game downloads, reducing power consumption.
- This mode is enabled by default when the device is plugged in.
- Users can also enable it on battery power through Settings > Power.
How to Activate
- Press the handheld’s power button during a download and confirm to continue downloading with the screen off.
- Automatically activates after the device enters idle timeout while downloading.

Today we are adding a new feature to Steam Deck, enabling it to complete all active downloads in a new display-off low-power mode, before going to sleep. This feature is enabled by default when Steam Deck is plugged in to power, and can also be enabled on battery power in Settings > Power.
This update improves battery efficiency and user experience by making game downloads less intrusive and helping preserve hardware.
