City officials have called on some residents to evacuate the Remington neighborhood as Baltimore City firefighters battle a massive three-alarm blaze at a multistory commercial building. The fire began on the structure’s exterior and is expected to continue burning into Friday night.
Fire Chief James Wallace stated that crews are fighting the flames from outside the building to create a protective barrier between the warehouse and nearby homes.
“I would not be surprised if, at some point, it does collapse,” said Fire Chief James Wallace during a news briefing.
He added that maintaining a safe distance and preventing the spread to residential areas is their top priority.
“The firefighters from BCF 100% saved the houses back here on 23rd Street,” Wallace said. “They’re inside the homes with handlines, on the roofs, and even operating from above.”
Resident Mollie Bailey, who lives on West 23rd Street, shared her experience as the event unfolded early in the afternoon.
“I thought, ‘oh gosh, did I leave the oven on?’” Bailey said. “Then I looked outside and saw smoke drifting across the neighborhood.”
She mentioned that friends living in Hampden also reported seeing the thick plume from their homes.
Firefighters continue combating a major three-alarm fire in Baltimore’s Remington area, focusing on containment and protecting nearby homes as residents are advised to evacuate.
