American Legion Volunteers to Fly Flags This Weekend for Veterans Day

It's time to show your colors—the red, white, and blue of our flag, a symbol of freedom and service. These colors have been official since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed the Flag Act. They fly over battlefields, government buildings, schools, and cemeteries.

The colors were assigned meaning by the Continental Congress in 1782. Secretary Charles Thomson stated that red represented valor and bravery, white stood for purity and innocence, and blue symbolized vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

American Legion members often demonstrate the proper way to handle the flag to educate youth and maintain the respect it deserves. For example, at Graceland Cemetery, volunteers repair flags damaged by wind and weather.

LuAnn Jackson reads the symbolism of each fold while members fold the flag. This process is repeated frequently at schools by American Legion members to teach the respect expected when handling the flag.

The patriotism embodied in the flag's colors is celebrated year-round. Thanks to the dedication of American Legion members and volunteers, the flags will proudly fly again this weekend for Veterans Day.

Author's summary: The American Legion and volunteers honor Veterans Day by repairing and flying flags, educating communities on the flag's symbolism and proper handling with deep respect.
