Canadians planning trips to the United States in the coming days may face disruptions due to potential U.S. flight cancellations caused by the ongoing government shutdown.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reportedly plans to reduce flights at 40 airports across the country if the shutdown continues. According to a source who spoke with CNN, the “Core 30” high-traffic airports will be among those most affected.
“Core 30 high-traffic airports will be among those impacted,” an FAA source told CNN.
“Flight volumes will be reduced by 10 per cent,” said Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, without clarifying whether it refers to the affected airports or all U.S. flights.
The government shutdown has forced 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers and 13,000 air traffic controllers to continue working without pay.
Daily Hive contacted major Canadian carriers for updates. Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, and Flair Airlines reported that their flights remain unaffected at the moment but confirmed they are closely monitoring developments.
“We are awaiting more details on the planned reductions,” said an Air Canada spokesperson.
