The Illawarra Hawks gained strong momentum toward their NBL championship hopes with a decisive 107-90 victory over the Cairns Taipans on the road.
Will "Davo" Hickey achieved the NBL season’s first triple-double at the Cairns Convention Centre, recording 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. QJ Peterson contributed 22 points with an impressive 4-of-6 from three-point range. JaVale McGee dominated inside, scoring 28 points on 12-of-13 shooting, alongside six rebounds and two assists.
“Our performance was really strong, especially coming off Wednesday playing at a high level and we didn't want to drop that intensity,” Hawks coach Justin Tatum said. “We understood Cairns was short-handed, so our mentality was to keep applying pressure. I loved the effort the guys brought.”
“They found ways to dominate and score in the paint and make it tough for Cairns.”
McGee came into the game fresh from his career-best performance on Wednesday, where he scored 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the Hawks’ home win. Cairns, having just ended a losing streak in Tasmania, struggled to contain his presence inside.
Summary: The Hawks' balanced attack, led by Hickey’s triple-double and McGee’s interior dominance, showcased their growing strength and resilience on the road.
