Although Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, dry weather has led to new fire advisories in the southern part of the province. Rocky View County has declared a moderate fire risk for both its east and west sides due to dry and windy conditions, according to the county’s website.
Bill Messner, Deputy Fire Chief of Rocky View County, explains that issuing advisories late in the season is not unusual.
“This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly,” said Messner.
The dry conditions have caused a rise in grass fires during the past week, with as many as three occurring in a single day. Some fires may have been started by human actions, such as discarded lit cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way,” Messner emphasized.
There is no set date for lifting the fire advisory. Messner expects it will likely remain for at least another week while dry conditions persist.
Summary: Rocky View County faces heightened fire risk as dry, windy weather prolongs fire advisory and bans despite the official end of Alberta’s fire season.
