Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend, following a turbulent start to the storm season. Sydney faces the possibility of late thunderstorms and strong winds on both Friday and Saturday, despite warm daytime temperatures.

Weather Outlook for Southeastern Australia

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathon Howe explained that much of southeastern Australia will experience several unsettled days due to an approaching cold front.

“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,”

Mr. Howe noted that parts of northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales should prepare for damaging wind gusts on Friday afternoon, with thunderstorms possible in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.

Severe Weather Warnings

“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,”

He further warned these areas might face damaging wind gusts accompanied by thunderstorms into Saturday.

Additional risks include heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and parts of interior Queensland.
