Manchester United youngster James Overy has been called up to the Australia national team for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia. Socceroos manager Tony Popovic included 11 new players in his squad, with Overy among the fresh faces following his strong performances at the U20 World Cup.
Turning 18 this weekend, Overy joined Manchester United in summer 2024 on a scholarship before signing a professional contract in July. Shortly after arriving, Ruben Amorim invited him into first-team training ahead of a Premier League match against Chelsea.
Despite suffering an eight-month injury layoff, Overy made his Under-18 debut in February, according to the Manchester Evening News. This season, he has been a regular for Darren Fletcher's Under-18 squad and has also appeared for the Under-21s in Premier League 2 and the National League Cup.
“It’s been really hard for James because obviously he’s made the move from Australia and he’s a terrific lad, first of all,”
said Adam Lawrence, former Under-18s manager, commending Overy’s resilience returning from injury.
James Overy’s call-up to the Socceroos highlights his rapid development and resilience, marking him as a key young talent for both club and country.
