Manchester United academy talent James Overy has earned his first senior international call-up for Australia ahead of the November friendlies, marking a major milestone in his young career.
The 17-year-old full-back recently returned from Australia’s U20 World Cup campaign in Chile and has since been training with United’s first team. This has given him an opportunity to work alongside and compete with senior players such as Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw.
“James has shown great progress and maturity for his age,” said sources close to Manchester United’s coaching staff.
Head coach Ruben Amorim, known for his faith in youth, handed debuts to three academy players last season. Reports indicate that Overy has continued to impress since joining first-team training.
Overy has transitioned swiftly from being the youngest member of Australia’s U20 squad to joining the senior national team. This call-up is part of Australia manager Tony Popovic’s effort to inject fresh talent and test the future core of Australian football.
“James Overy is among six uncapped players in the new-look Australia squad,” noted Popovic. “He has the potential to feature in one of our upcoming friendlies.”
Australia is scheduled to face Venezuela in Houston on 14 November, followed by a match against Colombia in New York. Overy, who has also represented Scotland at youth level, is one of 11 new faces in the reshaped squad.
James Overy’s first senior Australia call-up crowns an impressive month of progress, signaling the rise of a new defensive talent from Manchester United’s academy.
