Liberal senator questions Sussan Ley’s leadership amid party turmoil
Liberal senator Sarah Henderson expressed hesitation when asked if the Coalition could recover under Sussan Ley’s leadership. Her remarks came as the party worked to finalize its stance on net-zero emissions following weeks of internal strife.
“I do have to say really honestly, I do think Sussan is losing support,” she told Sky News on Friday. “But I do believe in miracles.”
Henderson, who previously served on the frontbench, said she could no longer “back things the way they are” ahead of an important party meeting next week.
“I’m not in the business of throwing anyone under the bus, I’m stating the bleeding obvious — we are in a dire situation,” she said. “The infighting has been terrible and I’m terribly sorry about what’s been going on in the Liberal Party.”
Despite her criticism, Henderson praised Ley’s decision to hold a series of meetings focused on defining energy and climate policy, calling it a meaningful step forward for the party.
