Edmonton politician Matt Jeneroux, previously speculated to possibly join the Liberals following Chris d'Entremont’s recent floor crossing, has declared his intention to resign his parliamentary seat.
Jeneroux’s resignation could enhance the Liberals’ chances of passing their budget without needing backing from other parties. He sent a letter on Thursday announcing his departure but did not explain his reasons for leaving federal politics.
It remains unclear when Jeneroux will formally step down or if he plans to vote on this week’s budget-related motions. The Liberals face critical votes, and losing any of the three could lead to an early election.
The Bloc amendment vote is scheduled for Friday, with the main budget motion expected to be debated later in November.
Following Jeneroux’s departure, the Conservatives would hold 142 seats, with the Bloc Quebecois at 22, the New Democrats at 7, and the Greens at 1.
