Florida basketball's redshirt freshman Olivier Rioux made history during the Gators' recent win. Standing at 7-foot-9, Rioux became the tallest player ever to participate in an NCAA game.
The event took place during the Gators' home opener, which also featured the unveiling of their national championship banner. However, the spotlight was claimed by a different milestone — Rioux's debut.
With minutes left in Florida's 104-64 victory over North Florida, the Gator student section enthusiastically chanted for Rioux to step onto the court. Coach Todd Golden responded to the crowd and allowed Rioux to join the game.
“Todd just looked at me,” Rioux said. “And I just (pretends to take shirt off) with my t-shirt. It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Rioux entered the game with 2 minutes and 9 seconds remaining, setting the record as the tallest player in college basketball history. The packed crowd of 10,065 erupted in celebration.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said about holding the record, with a lighthearted tone.
Golden shared a similar sentiment: “Not something that I think that much about. I like the banner dropping before better. I'm happy for him that he got an opportunity to get out there tonight.”
Olivier Rioux made NCAA history as the tallest player to ever appear in a college basketball game, marking a unique milestone celebrated by fans and coach alike.
