Olivier Rioux, the 7-foot-9 Canadian player for the University of Florida, made his much-anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history.
During Florida's commanding 104-64 victory, a crowd of about 10,065 fans began chanting “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the world’s tallest teenager and fan favorite, who hadn't played since joining in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden responded by putting Rioux in the game with 2:09 left and a score of 102-61.
“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Even though Rioux didn’t score or secure a rebound, he set a new record by becoming the tallest player to step on the college court, surpassing 7-foot-7 Kenny George of UNC Asheville (2006-08).
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said, noting his campus-wide popularity as he is often approached for photos and autographs.
His teammates were thrilled for him, especially close friend Micah Handlogten, who at 7-foot-1 joked that Rioux makes him feel small.
“So much fun,” Handlogten recalled. “When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and I was like, ‘Play with confidence.’”
Summary: Olivier Rioux’s debut as the tallest college basketball player marks a milestone celebrated by fans, teammates, and the university community alike.
