Olivier Rioux made headlines when he debuted for Florida, becoming the tallest college basketball player in US history. The Canadian athlete, standing at 236 cm, received a standing ovation as he entered the game with two minutes left in Florida’s 104–64 win over North Florida.
The 19-year-old is five centimeters taller than Gheorghe Mureșan and Manute Bol, both of whom share the NBA record for height. His appearance came after the crowd filled the arena with chants of “We Want Ollie,” prompting coach Todd Golden to bring him onto the court late in the game.
“The support from everybody was amazing, even on the bench and even the fans. I think everybody supported me. I'm very grateful.”
Although Rioux didn’t touch the ball, his presence alone drew enormous attention. The world’s tallest teenager stood smiling as fans and players alike marveled at his towering frame.
“It's another day, I guess.”
Even North Florida forward Trey Cady couldn’t help but grin while comparing his own height to Rioux’s, giving up more than a foot in the matchup.
Florida’s head coach Todd Golden admitted that by halftime, fans were shouting for Rioux to take the court. Yielding to the excitement, he subbed the young center in with 2:09 remaining, cementing a moment of NCAA history in the process.
Rioux’s debut wasn’t just about size; it was about spirit, unity, and the joy of witnessing something rare in the game of basketball.
