David Lammy forgets Remembrance symbol as he fills in for Starmer

David Lammy Forgets Remembrance Poppy While Filling in for Starmer

While substituting for Keir Starmer in the House of Commons, Justice Secretary David Lammy began the session with a solemn tribute to those who fought to defend freedom. However, it was soon noticed that he was not wearing a poppy, a traditional symbol worn by most MPs ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

About 15 minutes into Prime Minister's Questions, Lammy, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, was given a poppy pin by Cabinet colleague Bridget Phillipson to cover the oversight.

Explanation and Reactions

Responding to Tory MP Bob Blackman, Lammy attributed the mistake to buying a new suit that day. He said,

"I bought a new suit this morning because my Godmother said she would be watching."
He also expressed gratitude to Bridget Phillipson, stating,
"…despite wearing a new suit I have managed to put my poppy on."

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake criticized the situation, calling it

"a disgrace" that Mr Lammy stood in for Sir Keir at PMQs without wearing a poppy.

Context

Author's summary: David Lammy faced criticism after forgetting to wear a poppy during PMQs, which was later rectified with a pin from a colleague, amidst the solemn Remembrance tradition.
