Universal Pictures is developing a new installment in its classic action-adventure franchise, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reportedly in talks to return.
“Sources tell Deadline that Fraser and Weisz are discussing reprising their roles from the Mummy films of the late 1990s and early 2000s.”
According to multiple insiders, the project will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence, from a script written by David Coggeshall. Sean Daniel, a producer from the original series, will return to produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.
The collaboration marks another partnership between Radio Silence and Project X after their success reviving the Scream franchise. Although Radio Silence did not direct next year’s Scream 7, Project X continues as producer on that series. The two companies also worked together on Ready or Not: Here I Come for Searchlight Pictures.
Fraser and Weisz previously starred in two acclaimed entries of the series — The Mummy (1999) and The Mummy Returns (2001), both directed by Stephen Sommers. Each film earned over $400 million globally and helped cement the franchise as one of Universal’s modern classics.
Plot details for the new film remain undisclosed, and Universal representatives have declined to comment.
Author’s Summary: Universal Pictures plans a new Mummy film, reuniting Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz under the direction of Radio Silence, reviving the beloved adventure saga for a modern audience.
