The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has released an online map that highlights the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. This initiative aims to encourage development and investment in geothermal projects within the region.
The map serves as a strategic foundation for investments and supports targeted use of geothermal energy across the canton. It helps identify areas with favorable geothermal conditions, facilitating sustainable energy planning.
Geothermal energy, particularly through shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps, already plays an important role in ensuring a sustainable and secure energy supply. It contributes to the canton’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Recognizing the canton’s favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government responded to a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to create a geothermal register. This register aims to map the geothermal potential across Aargau’s municipalities.
The Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, together with internal and external experts, carried out a detailed study to assess the geothermal opportunities within the canton.
"The Canton of Aargau has favorable conditions for geothermal energy, which led to the creation of a geothermal register to identify potential in its municipalities."
Access to the full Suitability Map for Geothermal Energy is available online to support stakeholders.
Author’s Summary: Aargau’s new online geothermal suitability map lays the groundwork for sustainable energy investments, advancing the canton’s progress toward carbon neutrality by 2050.
