Richard Jefferson emphasizes Kyrie Irving’s vital role for the Dallas Mavericks, especially regarding rookie Cooper Flagg.
The 2025-26 NBA season began tough for the Mavericks. Although they secured the top overall draft pick and Cooper Flagg, the promising rookie has yet to significantly influence the team’s success. Currently, Dallas holds a 2-5 record, second-worst in the Western Conference. Expectations for Flagg to quickly shine have not been met so far.
Jefferson points out the difficulty lies largely in Kyrie Irving’s absence. Recovering from an ACL injury sustained last season, Irving’s continued rehab has left a key gap at point guard. While the Mavericks signed D'Angelo Russell as a temporary replacement, they chose to give Cooper Flagg the starting responsibilities instead.
Despite his potential, Flagg has not yet fully demonstrated his talents on the court.
“Those numbers could certainly increase with Irving on the court,” Jefferson explains, emphasizing how Irving’s presence will help Flagg and the entire Mavericks squad.
Irving’s eventual return is expected to bring stability at point guard and elevate the team’s performance.
Kyrie Irving's return from injury is poised to unlock Cooper Flagg's potential and strengthen the Dallas Mavericks’ season outlook.
